RESUMO:

The chemical and mechanical characteristics of a cast product depend directly on the of heterogeneity of chemical composition, dendritic spacing and the thermal variables of solidification. This work aims to obtain correlations between the mechanical properties, microstructure and solidification thermal variables of the CuAl6Si2 alloy. These variables are responsible for the formation of the phases present in the Silicon Aluminum Bronze, which interferes  on the mechanical properties of the material. The CuAl6Si2 alloy was solidified through an experiment in a unidirectional solidification device with an ascending heat flow system. The heat was extracted directionally by a water-cooled Toyo Tanso IG-11 graphite base. As regards to the microstructure analysis, optical microscopy was used to verify the structure of the cast material and the volumetric fraction phase in the microstructure, as well as the use of the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and X-ray Diffraction to further characterize the microstructural intermetallic phases. The Macrograph analysis showed an equiaxed structure in closer positions to the base and with increasing distance from the base, it showed a typical Widmanstätten structure. The thermal solidification variables generate results referring to the transfer of isothermal liquidus water and cooling rate. The mechanical properties are evaluated by the hardness and microhardness test throughout the longitudinal length of the solidified piece according to thermocouple positions, which presents a formation of the phases resulting from the solidification conditions imposed by the metal / mold system. A volumetric fraction of phase, hardness, microhardness and microstructure are correlated with thermal variables of solidification emphasizing the importance of the cooling rates in the solidification of Silicon Aluminum Bronze CuAl6Si2.
