RESUMO:

Among the various residues generated by the industry in Brazil we can highlight sugarcane bagasse ash (SCBA), which comes from the production of sugar and alcohol and in the process of cogeneration of energy. Currently the country stands out as one of the largest producers in the world and every year has been increasing this production, which in turn entails the generation of a significant amount of this ash. SCBA is generated from the burning of sugarcane bagasse in the steam-generating boilers of the mills. The residue generated presents in its composition high silica content (SiO2), in addition to small amounts of oxides of Al, Fe, Ca, Mg and K. This means that from the chemical point of view SCBA contains appreciable amounts of oxides present in clays used in the manufacture of ceramic products. Use of SCBA residue in ceramics tile represents greater interest due to chemical composition presented by ash, as it can provide not only a decrease in the sintering temperature of the ceramic body (providing reduction of energy consumption), but also presents a solution for the high amount of raw material consumed in ceramic coating masses. Based in these, this work aims to study the potential of sugarcane bagasse ash, obtained in different regions of Brazil, in the production of ceramic masses applied in the manufacture of porcelain stoneware, being evaluated the physical, chemical and mechanical properties of the samples. Thus, raw materials were characterized in terms of their chemical composition through the X-ray fluorescence assay, and they will also undergo the tests of granulometry, X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, scanning electron microscopy and pycnometry. Specimens containing 5% in mass percentage of BCC and sintered at 1200ºC will be made. Characterization of the specimens will be made through linear shrinkage assays, apparent specific mass, water absorption, apparent porosity, mineralogical analysis (XRD), scanning electronic microcopy (SEM) and mechanical resistance. It is expected that this study can verify the potential of incorporation of CBCA, and thus contribute significantly to the reduction of consumption of natural raw materials in the manufacture of porcelain stoneware, as well as the controlled disposal of the residue generated in the production of alcohol and sugar.
