SUMMARY:

Housing precariousness remains one of the major urban problems that requires public policies and investments by the State. In addition to this diagnosis, there is a lack of accurate, consistent, and up-to-date data, especially regarding the location, extent, and characteristics of precarious settlements. Recognizing the diversity of characteristics of these human settlements is essential for territorial planning. This research aimed to expand this knowledge through identification, description, and analysis of typologies. A clustering analysis methodology was used to examine qualitative data collected in an extensive field research coordinated by Ipea - the Informal Urban Nuclei Survey, conducted in 157 municipalities across six different regions of Brazil. The identified typologies reveal four different facets of precariousness present in Brazilian municipalities, as well as the regional inequalities related to this phenomenon. The research results contribute to understanding the specific needs of different types of settlements, as well as planning interventions and setting priorities.
