RESUMO:
The objective of this project is to contribute to the expansion of the supply of healthy food in the metropolises,
 through the recognition and analysis of metropolitan rural areas spaces, their importance and
 the identification of the means to ensure its production, stimulate its multifunctionality and guarantee 
the permanence of residents / producers in these rural spaces. The starting point here is the theoretical line
 of the new ruralities, with the assumption of the existence of the rural in metropolis, bringing the idea that
 “not everything is urban” and that this contemporary rural and close to large urban centers, despite maintaining 
one of its characteristics which is food production, is also very mixed, multifunctional, formed by pluriactivities, 
with its community connected in many ways with the cities. Thus, when speaking of the rural areas of the
 metropolises, in this context, the existence of a space with very multiple characteristics and which probably
 suffered transformation over the past few years, especially if it is taken into account urban pressures. 
Food production, which is one of the first and main activities of the traditional rural, would still have its strong
 role even in this rural more contemporary and with great influences on urban life. 
This research is based on in two central hypotheses: first, that it is possible to establish public policies that 
protect the existence of rural spaces and food production close to large centers, despite all the pressure 
of the advance of urbanization, thus guaranteeing the food sovereignty, access and a more sustainable 
and healthy food cycling and all the historical, cultural and environmental heritage that the countryside
 can offer; and second, that, in addition to public protection and management policies, the multifunctionality 
of space and the production of healthy food, via agroecology, are two parameters that, in themselves, 
have a lot of strength and contribute significantly to the permanence of rural spaces in the metropolis, 
facing urbanization.
