RESUMO:

The preservation of the railway heritage is an international and common discussion among the different countries that have experienced industrialization processes. The appreciation of the industrial past brought questions about the fate of buildings and even machinery, previously discarded. In Brazil, the interest of the public authorities for railway goods in preservation actions has been more intense since the 1980s, with falls at different levels. Currently, tourism appears with an emphasis on public management and, amid the destination of goods from the extinct Federal Railway Network, the creation of tourist trains is formally recommended by the Federal Government. Within this context, the number of city halls with new projects grows, there are 47 cities in São Paulo alone. Our research starts from the hypothesis that the efficiency of tourism use as a model for the use and appreciation of heritage depends on compatibility between the interests of tourism, preservation and rail transport. For the development of the research, we propose a cross-sectional analysis and aim to arrive at analysis criteria capable of simultaneously encompassing tourism, preservation and rail transport. For this study we adopted four Brazilian cases: Viação Férrea Campinas Jaguariúna (SP), Trem do Serra do Mar Paranaense (PR), Expresso Turístico (SP) and Trem de Guararema (SP).
