SUMMARY:

As of 2023, the Covid-19 pandemic continues to be a major global health crisis, with new cases and deaths reported daily. Despite the rollout of vaccines, the emergence of new variants has made controlling the spread of the virus increasingly difficult. In response, many countries have imposed new restrictions and measures, such as lockdowns and travel bans, to curb the spread of the virus.

The World Health Organization has reported a grim statistic, with a global death toll from the Covid-19 pandemic potentially surpassing 15 million individuals. In the past three years, the medical and scientific communities have faced a formidable challenge in comprehending the various means of transmission of SARS-CoV-2. From 2020 to 2022, the emergence of new virus variants has posed a significant threat, not only to public health but also to the economy due to the elevated levels of infectivity and transmissibility they possess.

It is important to note that research has conducted on the potential use of nanoemulsions containing essential oils as combating the spread of viruses such as SARS-CoV-2. Nanoemulsions are nano-droplets of oil dispersed in water, and they can increase the stability and bioavailability of essential oils. These substances have been shown to have antimicrobial, fungicide and antiviral properties, and studied as a potential tool in the fight against the pandemic (1,2).

All formulations were characterized by UV-Vis, FTIR, FESEM, Crio-TEM, NTA, DLS and Zeta Potential, Reology, MTT, quantitative PCR (qPCR) and Antimicrobial Activity Assay.
