RESUMO:

Electrostrictive materials work as artificial muscles that change shape when an electric signal is applied. Nowadays, ferroelectric-piezoelectric ceramics are the most used electrostrictors because they can generate intense force with a rapid response and at high frequencies. Most piezoelectric materials used by industry are lead-based, such as perovskites Pb(Zr, Ti)O3, where lead is a highly toxic element and its use is regulated globally. There are other piezoelectric compounds available, but many of them cannot achieve the same performance and market values as lead-containing compounds. Piezoelectric ceramics based on niobates and titanates are popular examples of lead-free piezoelectric in their composition. Non-stoichiometric oxides such as cerium oxide and bismuth oxide have recently opened a new class of electrostrictive materials with exceptionally high performance and not yet fully studied, and these materials are lead-free (Pb). In this project, we sought to explore the potential of lead-free electrostrictive materials including titanates and non-stoichiometric oxides to build a fundamental knowledge about the deposition of thin films for manufacture of adaptative devices. The technological objective is to demonstrate the use of electromechanically active components deposited in glass substrates to bring this technology to applications of adaptable optical devices.
