Development and characterization of environmentally friendly membranes, functionalized with TiO2 and Moringa oleifera nanostructures, for removal and inactivation of Escherichia coli

PÁGINAS: 248
GRANDE ÁREA: Outra
ÁREA: Multidisciplinar
RESUMO:

The use of bioactive filtering membranes for water filtration is a promising research area for the removal of a wide range of sedimentary and biological pollutants, disposal of substances by domestic and industrial sewage (biodegradable organic matter, bacteria, viruses, larvae and parasites, synthetic organic compounds (such as emerging contaminants), heavy metals and microplastics. The use of compostable biopolymers, as well as the incorporation of membrane functionalizing nanostructures, can bring benefits to sustainability and particularly to public health. The objective of this work consists of the development of water treatment membranes composed of poly(butylene adipate co-terephthalate) (PBAT), functionalized with TiO2 nanoparticles or bioactive compounds of Moringa oleifera, for application in microfiltration systems for removal and/or inactivation of Escherichia coli. For the preparation of the membranes, different porogens (sodium chloride, sodium acetate, Tween 80®, and glucose) were evaluated and, after choosing the one that best suited the intended application, the membranes were functionalized using titanium dioxide (TiO2 ) and bioactive compounds extracted from Moringa oleifera seeds. The membranes were manufactured by wire extension and airbrushing methods. These were characterized/evaluated by visual appearance, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Computerized Microtomography (Micro CT), Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), mechanical properties (strain (ε), stress at break (σr) and stiffness modulus (E)) and chemical resistance. Membrane preparation was assessed by Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) in a cradle-to-gate approach which, in addition to the other assessments, pointed to the 6% sodium chloride porogen, as the most suitable alternative for the intended application. The technique of aerography was promising in the mechanical tests, due to the laminar structure of the membranes, considering the concentrations of porogens and functionalizers that provided better conditions for the formation of pores in quantity and size capable of retaining the model E. coli microorganism. Also, Pure Water Permeate rate (PWP) and Escherichia coli (synthesized water) removal evaluations were conducted.
