SUMMARY:
In this work, we study the theory of simple random walks and the Bienaymé-Galton-Watson branching process, both in discrete time, and we present a proposal for applying this study in a didactic sequence for teaching probability in basic education. Initially, we approach probabilistic tools and concepts necessary for the analysis of our study objects. Next, it was the turn of simple random walks, introduced from the Player’s Ruin Problem, a particular case of simple random walks, where we prove results referring to the probability of ruin and the expected duration of the game, to later use them to prove other more general results, such as the probability and expected time of return to the origin of simple random walks. Next, we deal with the Bienaymé-Galton-Watson branching process, seeking to demonstrate results that guarantee the conditions under which we will or will not have the extinction of the process. And finally, we present a proposal for a didactic sequence whose centerpiece is the game The Prisoner of Monty Hall, built with the aim of gamifying the problems of the Player’s Ruin and Monty Hall.
