RESUMO:

The main objective of this work is studying the electrical, electrochemical and photoelectrochemical properties of one-dimensional structures of inorganic compounds, specifically iron oxide nanostructures (α-Fe2O3) grown on transparent conductive substrates. The main approach of this PhD plan is to investigate the fundamental transport properties of solid-liquid and solid-solid interfaces, seeking an understanding of charge transport kinetics, aiming for a perspective on the enhancement of material’s efficiency in photoelectrochemical cell applications (PEC). The nanostructures were synthesized in aqueous-based synthesis (low environmental impact and complexity), under hydrothermal conditions, with emphasis on microwave-assisted chemical route. Thus, the main focus of the work plan is the photo / electrochemical characterization in order to understand the interface and transport properties of this semiconductor and to convert this knowledge into a gain in the application of these materials in hydrogen production from photoelectrolysis of the molecule H2O (also known as “artificial photosynthesis”).
