RESUMO:
In the realm of Gaseous Detectors the Micro-Pattern Gaseous Detector (MPGD) technologies, such as Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) detectors, are currently the best options for detecting and tracking ionizing radiation and charged particles in terms of spatial resolution and signal gain. These detectors are also useful to tackle the Ion Back Flow (IBF) issue, which distorts the electric field and decreases the efficiency of detectors, thus they can be used in detectors under continuous data acquisition systems in collider experiments. However, MPGDs can be considerably expensive and require specific equipment for its construction to be feasible. Therefore, there are efforts of using the same concept based on these technologies but at lower costs and, consequently, lower resolution. This work aims to simulate one of such detectors, the ThickGEM, and compare it to the Multi-Wire Proportional Chamber (MWPC), which is the previous technology and still widely used. A full simulation is done for both types of detectors (ThickGEM and MWPC), by first using the GEANT4 toolkit for the initial interactions of the incident particle or radiation with the sensitive material of the detector, generating the initial ionizations. Then for the detectors themselves, Garfield++ is used for microscopic transport of the electrons originated in the primary interactions, avalanche simulation, and signal induction.
