SUMMARY:
Intermetallic compounds based on rare earths are widely studied today due to the quantity of phenomena and properties that can emerge in these materials. EuZn2Phas recently been classified as a Zintl compound, which exhibits the coexistence of an antiferromagnetic (AFM) state and insulating character. EuZn2Phas an antiferromagnetic ordering temperature of TN= 23 K, a temperature that is accessible when compared to compounds of the same 1-2-2 family. The crystal structure of EuZn2Pis of the CaAl2itype, belonging to the P3mspace group, which consists of a trigonal space group. In this work, we present a characterization of EuZn2P2, carried out through X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), specific heat, and magnetization. Measurements of specific heat as a function of temperature show the signature of the antiferromagnetic transition at TN= 23 K. Using Curie-Weiss analysis on susceptibility curves, we found an effective moment of pef= 7.00 μfor Hand pef= 7.00 μfor Hc, close to the expected values for Eu2+ with S = 7/2. Mössbauer spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance measurements were also carried out, and through Mössbauer spectrum fitting, we determined that the magnetic moments of EuZn2Pare out of the ab plane by an angle θ39°. These characterizations were performed with the aim of exploring the magnetic properties of EuZn2P2.
