Quantum heat engines based on generalized measurements

RESUMO:

Recently there is a growing interest in a new class of measurement-based quantum engine cycles. Since quantum measurements can change the state of the system and its internal energy, it is possible to devise generalized measurements to insert/remove heat as well as extract work from the system. In this dissertation, we will discuss thermodynamic cycles built up with generalized measures, including protocols that operate in engine, thermal accelerator, and cooler modes. Using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques we will show the characterization of a spin 1/2 quantum engine based on generalized measurements. We show the possibility of achieving unitary efficiency for this type of quantum motor. Finally, we will theoretically study the lack of casal orders definition of generalized measurements in these thermodynamic cycles. To this end, we will consider the application of two measurement channels in superposition, which is done through a quantum control switch of the measurement processes. We will see that the control/undefinition of causal orders of measurement operations plays a fundamental role in the studied quantum thermodynamic protocols.
