The end of distance: the power of digital technique on contemnporary subjectivity

SUMMARY:

The aim of this research is to investigate contemporary subjectivity and its relationship to digital images.The project proposes to analyze the relationship between subjects and images departing from the concept of distance as articulates by  Byung-Chul Han, which is fundamental for the discussion Han carries on the building of society and contemporary subjects. Han articulates a critique of the ways of using and the practicing the Internet, relating them to the disintegration of collective bonds and, therefor, identifying them as obstacles to politics. The constant elimination of the pathos of distance impoverish the possibility of narrating oneself and undermines the process of subjectivity.  Thus, we intend to consider the relationship between the concept of distance and digital technologies, evaluating its consequences on the digital network users.  The employed  framework emphasizes technical conditions that structure the existence of digital images as objects (platforms, interfaces) that define and organize the quotidian sensorial relationships.  In order to develop such a definition of image, the research is based on authors Lev Manovich and Shoshana Zuboff. Moreover, we will work with Agamben's definition of subject: the result of the encounter of a living being and an apparatus.  Considering that, in Han, distance has its genealogy in Benjamin auratic distance, described as a thread between time and space, this research intends to recognize and explain the space-time dimensions inherent to digital technique. Furthermore, it intends, through this processes, to investigate how these dimensions, so present in contemporary sociability, determine subjectivities.
