TITLE:

Frantz Fanon's black pathology and its ethical and political implications

PAGES: 58
BIG AREA: Ciências Humanas
AREA: Filosofia
SUMMARY:

The present research reflects on the black psychopathology of Frantz Fanon, a Martinican psychiatrist and philosopher inserted in the context of war and revolutions in the first half of the 20th century, who proposed a transformative way of looking at the psychological suffering of black people. Based on Fanon's main texts, this study seeks to understand the meaning, emergence, and consequences of the psychological illness exposed by him. Carrying out this work means, among other things, investigating in such texts the understanding of the philosophical and psychoanalytic influences on Frantz Fanon's thought; in particular, the understanding of the ethical vision based on the dialectic between the Self and the Other. In the case of black psychopathology, it is a Lacanian reinterpretation of Hegel and Marx's theory of alienation from the point of view of colonialism. In this perspective, the dialectic begins to understand the idea of black suffering under different aspects of the relationship between the Self and the Other mediated by the racialized relationship of colonialism. In particular, we highlight the following: “negrophobia” (the place of the black body as the Other to fear); the apprehension of the meaning of alienation in the concept of epidermization (the place of black skin in the game of coloniality masks); understanding the interference of black psychological illness in their recognition and in their ethical life; the apprehension of the way in which black psychopathology operates within a context of colonialism; and the understanding of Fanonian hypotheses for overcoming the psychological illness of black people: the construction of a universal being and self-determination. Thus, the research essentially analyzes texts by the author dedicated to the psychological suffering of black people. Thinkers who influenced him and authors who dedicated themselves to the analysis of his work are also consulted. We understand that, from the set of analyzes that we inherited from Fanon's reinterpretation of materialist dialectics and psychoanalysis, black psychopathology becomes a fundamental axis for a contemporary ethical-political debate, marked by the following question: to what extent does the invisibility of the black influence the ethical and political formation of the society in which it is inserted?
