Integrative morphology in Cycloramphus: uncovering modularity and ecology

RESUMO:

One of the most interesting discussion in biology is how the phenotype relates to genotype along the evolution process, especially when dealing with quantitative and continuous characters. The evolution of form as the result of development and function is part of the subject. The final shape of a skull, for example, is the result of a complex interaction among the development and function of its smaller parts, bones that develop through independent or congruent routes. The phenotype is a consequence of genetic effects as pleiotropy and epistasis. When bone blocks occur, the phenotypic variation inside a block is more congruent than that occurring in bones outside the block, that in turn, may vary alone or together with other bones, forming a different block varying phenotypically in a different way. The covariation in development or in function of blocks of structures, as bones in the skull, for example, may originate patterns called morphological modularity. We propose to test the occurrence of morphological modularity in the skull of the frogs in the genus Cycloramphus, noteworthy by presenting species divided in two ecomorphotypes. One including stream dweller species, the other including semifossorial species associated to the litter of forest areas. Additionally, there are two species living in highland grasslands, for which very few information on habits are available. We aim to test if evolutionary history or ecological pressures better explain the presence of modularity in the group.
