IMPACT OF ROADS ON BIODIVERSITY: EFFECTS OF NOISE AND LANDSCAPE ON BIRD AND MAMMAL ROAD-KILLS

SUMMARY:

Environmental conditions and resource distribution, together with the niche requirements of each species, determine the distribution of organisms in the landscape. Regions of great anthropic pressure have their spatial structure modified, reducing the quantity and quality of habitat, culminating in negative effects on the populations present there. Linear infrastructures reduce the quality of the adjacent landscape through the different disturbances it causes, such as the noise generated by vehicle traffic. Secondary and smaller roads, such as dirt roads, despite containing a smaller flow of traffic, can generate intense impacts on the organisms around them, due to the fluctuation in the occurrence of disturbances. Still, such roads are usually present in more preserved areas, increasing the intensity of their impacts. The effect of anthropophony on fauna is known for many species, mostly birds and amphibians, however there is still a gap in knowledge about its effect on terrestrial mammals, especially considering anthropophony arising from roads. When we consider South America, knowledge is even less. Thus, the present study seeks to analyze the effects of noise from dirt roads on the community of medium and large mammals, verifying whether there is influence of anthropogenic noise coming from roads on animal diversity and abundance in the Cantareira-Mantiqueira Corridor. It is also aimed to analyze the occurrence of pedestrians being run over by these animals on dirt roads in the region, linking the noise effect and animal abundance to these records. From the objectives, we raise the following hypotheses: 1) the intensity of noise and the proximity of dirt roads negatively affect the abundance and diversity of medium and large mammals in forest fragments; and 2) the abundance and diversity of medium and large mammals, as well as the intensity of noise on dirt roads, are related to the number of roadkills by these animals (the greater the abundance, the greater the number of roadkills; the greater the intensity of noise, the lower the number of pedestrians being run over). Thus, we have predictions that the greater the proximity to dirt roads and the noise in decibels, the lower the abundance and diversity of mammals in the fragments; and that the number of medium and large mammals being road-killed will be positively related to the abundance of these mammals in the forest remnants, and negatively related to the road noise level.
