The role of indirect effects across plant species bearing extrafloral nectaries mediated by protective ants in the Central Amazonia

RESUMO:

Plant species bearing extrafloral nectaries (EFNs) share protective ants. Consequently, this sharing of ants between plants increases the likelihood that plants potentially indirectly influence each other's ant visitation and potentially the protective service provided by the ants. As far as we know, no study has evaluated the indirect effects among plant species bearing EFNs mediated by protective ants and the consequences of this for plant herbivory. In this study, in 28 plots, we investigated whether 21 species of Bignoniaceae from Central Brazilian Amazonia, which differ from the attributes of extrafloral nectaries, can influence each other via shared ants, which were classified in dominants and subordinate ant species. We found that plant species with the highest number of active nodes had the higher potential to influence the visitation of dominant and subordinate ants in less attractive species. Herbivory patterns were similar between species that promote indirect effects (acting species) and species that receive indirect effects (target species), indicating an indirect neutral effect among plants, with no apparent cost for plants in ant sharing. By evaluating how indirect effects occur at the plot scale, we found that acting plants, neighbor, and non-neighbor plants have the same probability of ant attendance independent of the dominance degree of ants. The average herbivory per plant was also similar among acting plants, neighbor, and non-neighbor plants. The potential for propagation of indirect effects between plant species is reduced in the ant-plant interactions mediated by EFNs, with only a few plant species potentially able to impact each other, depending on the scale we look at across the forest landscape. Although the acting species are the most attractive for ants, especially the dominant ant species, their impact on other EFN-bearing plants at the local scale appears to be more diffuse and should occur among only a few pairs of species.
