RESUMO:

The Boca de Forno Ravine is a channel bed that is part of the drainage of the Itapecuru River valley, in the north of Maranhão State. This outcrop exposes the Lower Cretaceous rocks of the Itapecuru Formation (Aptian-Albian). Through the low course of the Itapecuru River emerges the continental succession of the northern part of the Parnaíba Basin. Deposition of the Itapecuru Formation occured in a fluvial meandering system and also lakes and other deltaic deposits. Fauna records have corroborated these paleoenvironmental interpretations, due to the presence of freshwater Semionotiformes, Hybodontid sharks, and Mawsoniidae (Coelacanthiformes), indicating the existence of large freshwater bodies in northern Maranhão state during the Early Cretaceous. The continental fauna has been recorded along outcrops close to the Itapecuru River. Therefore, the present work aims to complement these records, filling any spatial gaps between these outcrops. Most vertebrates from the Boca de Forno Ravine were associated with the Dinosauria clade, which is represented by two main groups: Sauropoda and Theropoda. The most specific groups identified (i.e. Carcharodontosauridae, Spinosauridae, Maniraptora, Neosauropoda) are compatible with the spatial and temporal records of the Itapecuru Formation, which are also recorded in other Lower Cretaceous outcrops on the African continent. Some specimens in this study required a more detailed approach (e.g. cladistic and morphometric analysis) and will be published in separate articles. Thus, the result of this work will be presented in article format, subdivided into three different chapters.
