The role of indirect effects mediated by protective ants across plant species bearing extrafloral nectaries in the Central Amazonia

RESUMO:

Plant species bearing extrafloral nectaries (EFNs) share protective ants. Consequently, a plant species can indirectly affect another through ants, potentially changing their protective service. In this study, we tested whether 21 species of Bignoniaceae that differ in the attributes of extrafloral nectaries influence each other via shared ants visiting EFNs and whether indirect effects lead to consequences on herbivory. We found that species with a higher acting degree over other species have more active nodes, monopolizing the visitation of the ant assembly, especially the dominant ant species. On the other hand, plant species with high target degree were not predicted by the EFN traits. Finally, herbivory patterns were not related to the acting or target degree of plant species evaluated.The potential for propagating indirect effects between plant species is reduced in ant-plant interactions mediated by EFNs, with few plant species impacting other species. These few indirect effects are predicted by the number of active nodes available in more attractive species, corroborating a competitive scenario in which these plant species monopolize the most aggressive dominant ant species. However, so far, we have not had evidence that these indirect effects generate a positive or negative impact on protecting plants in the forest understory of the Central Amazon.
