Historical connections between Amazon and the Atlantic forest: which dispersal corridors were used by snakes of the genus Bothrops and amphibians of the genus Leptodactylus in South America?

RESUMO:

Several biogeographical processes have been proposed in the literature trying to explain the great endemism and species richness of the Neotropical region. The emergence of the diagonal of open vegetation in South America, comprising the Cerrado, Caatinga and Chaco, which separated a large forest block into Atlantic and Amazon rainforests, may have been an important event related to biogeographical processes in the region. Despite this separation, several dispersal corridors across the diagonal have been proposed in the literature. Our work aimed to investigate which of those dispersal corridors must have been the most used by two clades of amphibians and snakes widely distributed in the Neotropical region, the snakes from Bothrops genus and the anuran amphibians from Leptodactylus genus. We used dated phylogenies from both clades and reconstructed the ancestral distributions of hypothetical ancestors in BioGeoBEARS package of R software. We observed the dispersal processes along the phylogenies in the reconstruction models, and highlighted those suggesting the use of a corridor. From the six models implemented for each group, the best evaluated models were DECTS and DEC for Bothrops and Leptodactylus, respectively. The dispersals reconstructed by models suggest the use of the Western Corridor mainly in older time slices within Bothrops phylogeny. For more recent time slices and the genus Leptodactylus, the use of the western corridor was not evident. The results are in line with the Western Corridor hypothesis, as the oldest, historically connecting clades from the Amazon and the Atlantic Forest. However, for the analized groups, more recent divergences, from approximately 10 million years ago, indicate that the three corridors, West, Central and East, are equally important.
