Evolution of the geographical distribution of snakes and anuran amphibians in the Neotropical region

Several biogeographical processes have been proposed in the literature to try to explain the great endemism and richness of species in the Neotropical region. Among them, the emergence of the open dry diagonal in South America, composed of the Cerrado, Caatinga, Chaco and Pampas, which separated a large forest block in the current Atlantic Forest and Amazon. Despite this separation, several dispersal corridors across the diagonal have been proposed in the literature. This project aims to investigate which of these corridors must have been the most used by two groups of amphibians and reptiles widely distributed in the Neotropical region, the genus of anuran amphibians Leptodactylus and the genus of snakes Bothrops. For this, we use dated phylogenies from the two groups and reconstructed the ancestral distribution of all their hypothetical ancestors using the BioGeoBEARS package in the R software. From the reconstruction models, we observed the dispersal processes along the phylogenies, highlighting those that suggest the use of some dispersal corridor. Of the six models implemented for each group, the best evaluated were DECTS and DIVALIKETS for Leptodactylus and Bothrops, respectively. The dispersals reconstructed by the models mainly suggest the use of the Andean corridor for both groups, although not so clear for the genus Leptodactylus. The results found validated the hypothesis of the Andean corridor as the most important and the oldest for the groups of organisms analyzed.
