RESUMO:

In this master’s thesis, composed of two chapters, we aimed to understand the patterns of genetic isolation of white-lipped peccaries (Tayassu pecari) and the underlying processes. In the first chapter, we evaluated patterns of spatial genetic autocorrelation. We observed that there is a weak fine-scale genetic structure related to the social behavior, the promiscuous mating system and the dispersion by both sexes. Although both sexes disperse at the same frequency, females do so at shorter distances while remaining within the genetic neighborhood of their group, while males disperse beyond their group neighborhood. In addition, the genetic structure was stronger in the plateau, suggesting that there may be barriers to gene flow in this region, which may be associated with the more intense process of anthropization in this region. In the second chapter, we  evaluated the role of landscape in the genetic isolation patterns observed in the previous chapter. We hypothesized that highways would be the main barriers to gene flow. We observed that the gene flow was restricted by the paved highways associated with agricultural areas and that the roadkill occurrence is favored by the low connectivity of the landscape. These results suggest that it is important to increase the connectivity of the landscape and facilitate the passage of the herds through access tunnels, strategically associated with the establishment of ecological corridors. In general, maintaining a connected landscape that favors the dispersion of migrant individuals is essential to ensure that gene flow levels are sufficient to mitigate the effects of the pre-existing socio-genetic structure. Thus, it is concluded that in order to guarantee the long-term viability of white-lipped peccary populations in the Pantanal and the adjacent plateau, it is essential to prioritize the establishment of ecological corridors to increase connectivity between herds.
