RESUMO:

This thesis presents a teaching and learning proposal with the application of a Significant Teaching Unit (UEPS) on Particle Physics (PF) for High School. Different methodologies and materials were adopted. Initially, the previous conceptions that students had about
the structure of matter and its constituent elements were investigated, as well as about the act of doing science and how to investigate nature, using as reference some of the ideas of Paulo Freire and David Ausubel. Then the specific content was introduced using active educational practices, such as the flipped classroom and the use of social media. Finally the students followed the development and application of a low cost experiment, composed by a cloud chamber to visualize the interaction of particles from cosmic rays, to consolidate the proposed concepts. Thus, it was verified the way in which this activity model improves teaching and learning in the concepts of Modern and Contemporary Physics (FMC), as well as, it was shown the importance of experimental practices for teaching physics. Qualitatively, the students were very involved with the proposal. It was noticed by the tudent atitude changes in the classroom through the final discussions of the activity. A difference between the previous and final student conceptions was observed. To improve and further develop this activity it is possible to use the cloud chamber to measure the muon flux from the cosmic radiation.
