SUMMARY:

In this master's thesis research, we explore the teaching of fundamental astronomy concepts with a special focus on indigenous knowledge as generative themes within the framework of the Three Pedagogical Moments (3 MPs). The work addresses the challenge of the Brazilian educational system in promoting learning, especially in the context of pseudoscientific theories like flat Earth beliefs. It emphasizes the importance of critical thinking and the pedagogical approach of Paulo Freire, which promotes dialogue and student-driven knowledge construction. However, the complete implementation of this approach is hindered by rigid school curricula in public schools. In an attempt to address this issue, the dissertation introduces the Three Pedagogical Moments (3 MPs) as a way to reconcile Freire's approach with traditional curricula. The 3 MPs involve problematization, organization, and application of knowledge. The research focuses on the application of an educational product in a school in São Paulo that has adopted the "(PEI) - Programa Ensino Integral " (Integral Education Program). The educational product covers four themes related to indigenous astronomy and physics, emphasizing the importance of hands-on science education. To that end, the author presents an educational product divided into the following sections: "Apparent Movement of the Sun," "The Seasons of the Year," "The Brother," and "The Woman of Jaxi." The dissertation highlights the interactions between the teacher and students, the challenges encountered during the implementation of the educational product, and the need for improvements in mathematics proficiency for a deeper understanding of scientific concepts. As a result of the application of the educational product, it was possible to conclude that the lessons promoted respect for indigenous culture and highlighted the significant relationship between indigenous peoples and astrology, thereby preserving indigenous knowledge, which plays a vital role in maintaining cultural diversity in Brazil. Education is seen as a powerful tool, but it requires societal mobilization to advocate for indigenous rights and the preservation of their traditions. The work contributes to the search for more effective and contextually relevant approaches to teaching and learning, especially in a context of significant changes in schools.
