TITLE:

Historical Perspectives on the Principle of Least Action: contributions to Optics teaching

PAGES: 127
BIG AREA: Ciências Exatas e da Terra
AREA: Física
SUMMARY:

The São Paulo Curriculum is an official document that establishes pedagogical guidelines for elementary and high school education in São Paulo. However, at times, the high school curriculum seems to have not conducted a thorough analysis of the elementary school curriculum, which can result in gaps in student learning. An example of this is geometric optics, which receives little attention in the final years of elementary school, as well as the role of the history of science in scientific literacy, which is not clearly outlined in the high school stage. Recognizing this need for improvement, this dissertation proposes a didactic sequence of six lessons that introduces concepts and principles of geometric optics through videos on historical perspectives to the principle of least action. This sequence also includes a website that not only provides the videos, but presents all the practices, approaches, and activities present in this material, offering teachers an organized and easy way to access the complete content. It is worth noting that this material also includes an experimental activity that consists of analyzing properties of a cycloid and relating them to the famous brachistochrone problem, as presented in one of the videos. This practical activity strengthens the contextualized understanding of geometric optics, establishing connections between theory and practice. By incorporating multiculturalism, the videos not only discuss scientific aspects but also value cultural diversity. The proposed didactic sequence also includes a systematization activity inspired by the active methodology World Café. Through World Café, students share ideas and perspectives on the importance of valuing and representing women in science. Although no formal evaluations were carried out, the application of this didactic sequence in a first-year high school class presented promising indications regarding student learning. In general, students showed good engagement and participation throughout the proposed activities, which leads us to believe that the use of historical approaches, together with diversified activities, can contribute to student learning.
