PROPOSAL FOR A STATION ALLOCATED AT A FUEL STATION FOR THE COGENERATION OF ELECTRICITY, HEAT AND HYDROGEN VIA COOPERATION OF AN ETHANOL REFORM REACTOR WITH A SOFC: Energy, Exergetic and Economic Analysis

SUMMARY:

The work presents a model of an electricity and hydrogen generating model in order to be applied and strategically allocated in fuel stations, considering the Brazilian conditions that such fuel stations already follow marketing and logistics premises that allow to being regularity provided with ethanol fuel as well are usually near to the consumers. As a possibility, the strategy of using the wide network of fuel stations, in relevant locations as urban centers and on highways in order to supply hydrogen and electricity is configured. This strategy would allow for the modernization of the Brazilian infrastructure in terms of the supply of green hydrogen and electricity considering low pollutant emissions as well using a biofuel widely disseminated in the Brazilian territory. Another objective advantage refers to the direct use of green-hydrogen after it being processed this proposed model, thus solving the technical and economic difficulties currently observed related to the storage of high volumes and transport of this gas in which, alternatively, ethanol and water are transported and stored and processed via the model for the use of hydrogen directly to consumption demand. In order to allow the concomitant production of electricity and hydrogen in fuel stations provided with ethanol, the proposed model aims an operational integration between an ethanol steam reformer with a solid-oxide fuel cell (SOFC). The proposal establishes the operational integration that the SOFC supplies thermal energy to the steam reform of ethanol in the reformer's reactor which supplies the fuel in the form of synthesis gas to the SOFC. This proposal is based on the characteristics of the steam reform of ethanol that is endothermic, combined with the SOFC propriety that produces heat in abundance as a by-product. Thus, the work consists of thermodynamic analysis, considering the balance of mass, energy, and exergy as well as an economic-financial analysis of the electricity and hydrogen generating modeled, aiming to identify the energy potential of this proposal as a validation of feasibility, regarding technical and financial assessments. A functional simulation is established in order to evaluate the varied conditions of production of electricity and hydrogen. The objective is to identify the results regarding those operational variations in order to consider the most appropriate conditions in energetic and monetary terms of the proposed model, allocated at fuel stations or in any place where there is access to ethanol and water. As a conclusion and result, the technical feasibility is identified, regarding the operational integration between the reformer and the SOFC based on the energetic and exergetic analyses, in which it is identified that the thermal energy generation property of the SOFC is sufficient to allow the reform ethanol steam at 650K, presenting 98.2% of exergy efficiency; and the SOFC operates with an exergy efficiency of 77.8%. The economic viability of the proposal to produce hydrogen is attested. Although, the remuneration for the distributed generation of electricity requires future research due to the tariff variations, regionally practices.
