SUMMARY:

Faced with situations of accidents involving explosives, intentional explosions due to acts of
terror or the need to demolish an installation to make room for a new one, it is necessary to
know the efforts required in the structural elements, and to know if they can withstand such
actions. This work aims to study the demanding efforts generated in structural elements
composed of concrete and steel (reinforced concrete) subjected to blast loads, taking into
account the behavior of these materials when subjected to high rates of deformation, and possible nonlinearities that may be formed in the structure, such as plastic hinges at
certain points. The work also aims to present an approach simple to implement in Structural
Engineering and that provides satisfactory results for the design and verification of structures
subjected to blast loads. The method consists of determining the natural period of the
structure corresponding to the mode of the displacement field exhibited under the action of
the blast load and determining the ratio between this period and the duration of the load.
