TÍTULO:

Safety parameters study of a minor actinide burner core for the S-PRISM fast reactor

PÁGINAS: 75
RESUMO:
The concerns regarding nuclear waste management arise daily. Some countries, like Brazil, do not have a long-term nuclear waste management storage facility, and yet they keep working in an open fuel cycle. An effective option to reduce radiotoxicity levels related to spent nuclear fuel is to promote actinide transmutation through fission in fast nuclear reactors, for they feature many characteristics favorable to do so, especially in comparison to PWRs. The Gen-IV International Forum recognized this ability, and most of the designs selected were fast reactors, being the sodium-cooled fast reactor one of them. This work aimed at the study and analysis of a fast reactor metal core design, to propose a new core configuration capable to improve the transmutation of actinides and fission products. The S-PRISM model was chosen and the two types of fuel pins were modeled on MCNP6: driver and blanket pin cells. For the driver pin, k-infinity values decreased almost linearly with pitch increase, a different behavior than expected for an LWR. Isothermal coefficients of temperature were low but negative. The k-infinity behavior when active fuel height was varied showed that neutron leakage in the axial direction is a very important design parameter. When burnup was simulated for the driver and blanket fuel pins, a curious curve was observed: k-infinity increased for the blanket fuel pin with time. Conversion ratios were also observed during burnup and presented low values since the core configuration is designed for actinide transmutation. The next step will be the analysis of several aspects of the core: neutron flux spectra, power densities, shutdown safety and aspects of burnup behavior.
