TÍTULO:

Left Bloc 2.0: A study on the online discoursive strategy used by the Portuguese party on Facebook

PÁGINAS: 120
GRANDE ÁREA: Outra
ÁREA: Multidisciplinar
RESUMO:

This paper analyzes the discourse strategy used by the official Facebook page of the Left Block party during the 13 days of the official campaign for the Portuguese legislative elections of 2019 using the Discourse Theory by Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe. The discourse analysis of leftist alternatives becomes important in a global conjuncture of political, economic and social crisis and the rise of the right, a moment in which the left's renewal is necessary. At this point, the very interaction between political spectra may be outdated, anchored in issues that do not represent emerging social conflicts. After successive accumulated political and social defeats, the contemporary left should think beyond the class struggle and seek ways to articulate transversal and heterogeneous subjects without erasing the identity of the actors involved. In this paper, the perspective of Laclau and Mouffe (2015) is used as a theoretical discussion and method of analysis of online electoral campaigns developed by contemporary political alternatives. In this theory Laclau and Mouffe understand discourse as an articulation between words, actions and physical facts inherent to human beings and nature, which can be applied to new technologies. Social networks have become a powerful tool for digital political communication in recent years and have become popular among political parties and figures. Through these platforms the dissemination of campaign messages and political information can be done in a simple and quick manner. In the left coalition that has ruled Portugal since 2015, the Left Block party stands out. Led by young leaders, the party maintains a Facebook page of its news media (esquerda.net) for opinion articles, informational content and campaign material. The “Esquerda Net” page was submitted for posts extraction between September 22 and October 4 2019 through the former Facebook app Netvizz and manual scraping. The posts obtained were analyzed according to the Discourse Theory in the matters of appeals made, topics addressed, presence of transversality and the type of discourse identified. The results indicate that the Left Block used emotional appeal in most publications, as well as addressing non-priority campaign themes and presented few messages in a transversal manner, adopting an agonistic discourse in over half of the analyzed posts. The method developed in this paper can be used to study online election campaigns whose political sphere is highly polarized and could produce new contributions to the field.
