RESUMO:

Water, which is universally considered essential to the maintenance of life, has now been much discussed by the academic community that seeks to mobilize the political and business sectors, since one of the great challenges for humanity is the maintenance of this resource. "Thinking" about the issue of sustainability in the management of water resources is very recent. Only at the beginning of this century did sustainability aspects become characteristics understood as differentials for the market. However there are several doubts about the appropriation of this term for the industry, which is pointed by some authors as business speeches to a new standard of quality and differentiation to continue in the market. The main concern of this research is to understand how the theme of water management is treated in the perspective of understanding about the concept of sustainability. The investigated company is an automobile industry that is located in ABC Paulista, which is part of Macrometrópole Paulista, which houses a high concentration of industries and large companies, which are inserted within the public supply system and have differentiated tariffs. The research problem investigates the social representations of the COMPANY managers in Brazil in relation to water resources, to understand how the uses and applications of water by the automobile industry represent sustainability. The hypothesis is that there is a lack of knowledge about the concept of sustainable development, which has repercussions on how the industry operates the management of water resources. Among the first findings, I identified that the term "sustainability" within the investigated organization assumes several representations by the actors involved in the management. For most managers and technical staff, the term appears to be related to economic aspects. From the analysis of the social representations for the water uses in the industry by the actors showed the idea of sustainability represented by the utilization of rainwater..
