AREA: Multidisciplinar
SUMMARY:

This thesis aims, through a historical-sociological perspective, to analyze and investigate the social identity of Muslim women. This investigation aims to verify the plurality of cultural identities of Muslim women: of African origin, Brazilian without ethnic and religious ancestry (called reversed) and Muslim by birth, based on a unique combination of self-perception and recognition, feeling of belonging, tradition, religious values and beliefs and the intersection between gender, class and race. In other words: the aim is to understand how the specific identifications of being Muslim, of women born in the respective religion, lead them to consider those who are reverted and those of other ethnicities as unequal, inferior, reducing the person to a false, distorted way of being, which restricts it. It focuses, therefore, on the narratives and personal trajectories of religious women, offering themselves as real promotions of visibility and understanding of the opinions, attitudes, positions of those born Muslim regarding reverted Brazilian women who profess their faith in the Islamic religion. In order to complement the analysis regarding the social identity of Muslim women, this work searches for the stigma of religious women based on the textuality of Brazilian journalistic narratives in print and virtual media, more specifically with regard to issues related to social position. of women in the Islamic religious context. In this way, they ask themselves, through three questions: (a) what is the sociodynamics of the relationships established between the reverse-born Brazilian Muslim woman and the Afro Muslim woman in Islam? (b) does the intersection of gender, race and social class imply the experiences and place that reverted Brazilian women and women of African origin occupy in the Islamic religious community? (c) what are the contributions of the discourses of Brazilian journalistic productions about Islam and the understanding of Muslim women and religion? To fulfill this analytical proposal, it was essential to record the experiences of Muslim religious women who, through the use of Oral History (OH), could raise questions to understand the relationships that exist between reverted Muslim women born into the religion. And the selection and verification of journalistic discourses through the comparative perspective of Muslim women to recognize the information and interpretations of the narratives with the real condition of women inserted in the Islamic religious context. For this study, historical, sociological and anthropological concepts are used, such as: power relations; alterity and recognition because the aim of this thesis is to consider the attitudes and strategies of members of a cohesive group of women born into the Islamic religion, to perceive in the textual aspects of journalistic narratives conditions for establishing stigmas in order to understand the gradual subjection of Brazilian women reversed and of African origin. Therefore, this research is concerned with understanding the susceptibility of Muslim Brazilian women according to group norms and standards.
