“Crisis of masculinity” and masculinist discourses on the internet through the analysis of a “red pill” podcast: from mythical reactionaryism to neoliberal subjection

SUMMARY:

The "red pill" metaphor has been used by some groups of men, especially online. Based on the thoughts of Rollo Tomassi, an American best seller, these groups structure a matrix of thought based on the naturalization of misogyny, the rationalization of affective-sexual relationships and the idea that society would, in contemporary times, be a kind of dictatorship that favors women legally, sexually and economically, inscribing their thinking in an idea of a "crisis of masculinity". Starting from this notion of "crisis" as a key, this form of masculinism is investigated, its position in a broader insertion in the order of masculinisms since modernity, as well as its relationship with other "crises" that masculinity has gone through before of the current one. From a selection of 81 videos from a wider set published by a "red pill" podcast throughout the year 2022 (1,588 videos), a corpus of analysis was created to reconstitute a broader worldview, seeking to understand, the starting from the statements, that matrix of thought, with the help of some discourse analysis tools. The initial hypothesis that guided the work was that these speeches showed the predominance of reactionaryism over gender roles. However, as the analysis progressed, it was realized that they represent not only this facet – mobilized from a supposed crisis of masculinity – but also a capture of these subjects by the neoliberal discourse.
