SUMMARY:

In this dissertation, we intend to propose a connection between Care,
Social Reproduction, Gender and the Prison System. We start from the assumption
that Care is feminized, because it is carried out mostly by
women and by female bodies. Our hypothesis is that those who care for
women in prison are, in the majority of cases, other women who are also
also responsible for looking after their homes, communities and social reproduction work.
of social reproduction. Our aim is to investigate how the feminization of
and the social reproduction of life lead women to care for others.

partner, factors that make it difficult for them to take care of themselves, their families
family and their own survival. We therefore problematize the
care experienced by these women, in the light of critical feminist theories and
theories and gender studies, using, above all, feminist theories of care

and decolonial feminism, as well as using Foucauldian concepts of biopower,
disciplinary device, device of sexuality and surveillance
(FOUCAUT, 1977; 1985; 1988).

To this end, we sought to answer the following
questions: how does the feminization of care and the social reproduction of life
lead women prisoners to care for others and not receive care?
How do women experience care before, during and after imprisonment? A
The methodology adopted was qualitative, using field research,
plus a literature review, documentary analysis and unstructured interviews carried out in the field.
interviews carried out in the field. The documents analyzed
were reports on maternity and the prison system produced by the
Instituto Terra, Trabalho e Cidadania (ITTC) and the Instituto de Defesa
Institute for the Defense of the Right to Defense (IDDD), as well as data from official governmental
agencies such as IBGE, CNJ, IPEA and INFOPEN. Our field observations,
made in 2022 and 2023, were guided above all by observing and
actions carried out by three resistance groups
against the prison system: the Por Nós collective, made up of women

São Paulo.

Hirata's (2022) theory that caregiving is done more
exercised by women than by men and that in Brazil the people who
takes care of people is organized civil society and NGOs, rather than the state itself.
tends to be confirmed in our analysis of the results.
We observed in the activities of these groups that there are not enough public policies
policies for the care of incarcerated people in Brazil and that
that these movements are responsible for providing support and creating care networks for women prisoners.
