CYBER-FASCISM IN BOLSONARO'S BRAZIL
The reactionary communication propelled by the private apparatuses of cyberculture and operated by the Brazilian far-right government:

SUMMARY:

The beginning of the 21st century was marked by a paradigm shift in the means of communication and interaction within contemporary societies. The arrival and widespread access to the internet, with its decentralized architecture, in the early 2000s, gave rise to a series of social movements that seemed to converge towards the construction of collectives guided by ideas of social justice, democracy, and the common good. However, capitalism, operated within the relentless framework of neoliberalism, stood ready to react to this wave of what were then called networks of indignation and hope. The closed and controlled structure of the main online social networks, commanded by the Silicon Valley oligopoly, coupled with the global economic crisis of 2008, triggered, in various countries, a political dynamic driven by actors and parties aligned with the far-right political spectrum and rekindled a phenomenon permeated by perverse and self-destructive practices that appeared to be buried in a not-so-distant past: fascism. Since 2010, a reactionary wave, led by far-right political representatives, has harnessed the ambivalence of networks, the contradictions of the capitalist system, and the weaknesses of liberal democracy itself to naturalize the facets of fascism back into the heart of society. The elections that brought Donald Trump to the presidency of the United States in 2016 formalized fascism at the helm of the world's wealthiest country and undeniably opened the doors to the rise of what is referred to in this work as cyber-fascism. This involves recognizing the fascisization of contemporary societies in the current historical time, which is communicated in the key of cyberculture. In addition to Trump, other far-right leaders, formal representatives of fascism, have also gained prominence on the global political stage. In Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro was elected president of the country in 2018 and has since overseen the growing formalization of Brazilian cyber-fascism. This thesis primarily examines the realm of communication in the digital era and, through a dialogue between theoretical frameworks addressing the nuances of classical 20th-century fascism and fascism as a phenomenon that transcended its historical time, it explores the functioning of this political and social modus operandi in contemporary times. It draws parallels between its relationship with neoliberalism and presents elements of reactionary communication officially operated by the Brazilian government under the leadership of Jair Bolsonaro.
