The common at the crossroads: cartography of a citizen laboratory

PAGES: 180

AREA: Multidisciplinar
SUMMARY:

This doctoral thesis delves into an experimental exploration centered around the establishment of a commons-based institution in Santos, São Paulo. Drawing inspiration from analogous endeavors in 12 cities across Europe and South America, the research journeys through these locations, engaging in a comprehensive dialogue. The thesis introduces the novel concept of “commoners cartography” as a methodology and explores the theoretical implications arising from shifting the notion of the commons from the global North to the South. It posits the crossroads as a crucial site of resistance against colonialism and an arena of possibilities for the transformation of reality, as exemplified by the commons’ practices of “becoming-terreiro” and “becoming-forest”. The thesis seeks to enrich the field of commons studies by harnessing knowledge, methodologies, and collaborative tactics practiced by the marginalized communities of Brazilian peripheral territories. It starts from the premise that the commons can serve as a means to transcend capitalism and highlights pathways to expand self-governance, reclaim shared resources, and safeguard communal assets from the pervasive privatization underpinning neoliberalism. A key contribution of this research lies in documenting the process of establishing a citizen laboratory, a political institution firmly grounded in the commons. The citizen laboratory serves as an interactive space where individuals converge to foster technology creation and innovate in support of life’s preservation. By unveiling the establishment and functioning of this unique commons-based institution, the thesis contributes valuable insights into the potential of such initiatives in reshaping societal dynamics and countering prevailing market-driven paradigms.
