SUMMARY:

In the Brazilian abolitionist context, migration policies were a decisive factor in the
formation of society and its social, political and economic dynamics that we currently
identify. The interior of the state São Paulo was a great recipient of these immigrants due
to the coffee plantations that needed their labor in a context in which slavery was
experiencing its slow and gradual process of abolition. This is the case of the municipality
of Vinhedo, which received a huge number of Italian men and women, among other
nationalities, who built the city the way we know it today.
The official memory of this region privileges this Euro-descendant past, creating a
symbolic marking and a representative system, which are part of the identity construction
processes, focused on these aspects. On the other hand, it denies its Afro-descendant and
indigenous pasts, which were equally present in this formation. In this process, different
faces of the same story were erased, disregarded and placed underground.
Understanding this context from the power relations intrinsic to the support of racial
hierarchies, the concept of framing memory will be used to define the object of study of
this project, determining that the framing work was developed through the precepts of
migratory policies linked to the categories of whiteness and whitening.

That said, the research to be developed intends to answer the following question: how
does the framing of memory act in the process of construction of black identities in
Eurocentric cities?
The methodology identified for carrying out this research, in addition to a bibliographical
and documental investigation, will be semi-structured interviews and participant
observation in events in the municipality of Vinhedo.
