SUMMARY:

The present research seeks to perform an analysis of the semiotic components pertinent to the field of comics and to verify in what way the conjunction of these elements recreated the oral memory of the surviving families of the attacks perpetrated by the Israeli army in 1956, in the palestinian villages 

of Khan Younis and Rafah, located in the Gaza Strip, based on the comics Footnotes in Gaza, by Joe Sacco. The selected methodology for the research is based, mainly, on the bibliographical review, with special emphasis on the work The System of Comics, by the Belgian author Thierry Groensteen. Together with the concepts proposed by Groensteen, we will bring other perspectives of analysis about the comics conception, such as those approached by Antônio Luiz Cagnin, Barbara Postema, Daniele Barbieri and Paulo Ramos, for example, in order to allow a broad and detailed panorama about the characteristic potentialities of this particular language. Thus, based on these surveys, we will try to evaluate how the author Joe Sacco uses these elements to reconstruct the oral memory of the survivors, and in what way these conceptions converge for the realization of the comic-reportage segment - a characteristic and recurrent theme of the author. Sacco's proposal for this work is precisely due to the verification of the almost non-existence of official documents by the United Nations (UN) and the conflicting records of the Israeli Security Forces about the case. The need to bring to light the events from the voices, and the memory, of those who experienced in loco the episodes of violence in the context and scenario of conflicts in the Gaza Strip, that is, its own population, was seen there. We intend with this, from the analysis undertaken throughout the research, to verify in what way the potentialities belonging to the language of comics can reconstruct and evidence the element of oral memory, so characteristic, and widely covered, in various other segments of the Human and Social Sciences.
