The “iron trio” against fascism: football fans, activism and resistance

This research seeks to contribute to the development of debates on sports activism in Brazil - considering that this activism is constituted both by actions that aim to transform the specific social and political structures of sport and by those that seek, through it, to achieve broader political and social transformations. To this end, it addresses three football fan activist collectives: Coletivo Democracia Corinthiana, Bloco Tricolor Antifa and Porcomunas. In doing so, this research aims to answer the following questions: how do these collectives organize, interpret and put their activism into practice? And to what extent and how can it represent a form of resistance to the structures of domination of the football universe and society in general? To answer the formulated questions, it adopts a multiperspectival approach and, supported by John B. Thompson's critical social theory, proposes that a practice can be characterised as a form of resistance when it opposes one or more forms of domination. Regarding the method, it adopts the following procedures: literature review, questionnaire application, direct observation, individual and group interviews and content analysis of posts on digital social networks. Based on these procedures, it (re)constructs the trajectory of struggles fought by associations of football fans in the context of the city of São Paulo from the 1940s onwards and develops a taxonomy of these associations. It also analyses the profile and the modes of action of the members of the collectives researched, as well as their arenas and agendas of struggles. Among other things, this analysis indicates that the activities of these members establish a field of interaction where they can fulfil, to a certain extent, their affective needs, as well as represent more democratic ways of occupying urban spaces. It also indicates that the struggle of these collectives targets violence and fascist ideas and that, in order to confront them, they invest in organizing activities of political awareness and social inclusion, as well as in protests and street demonstrations. This investment is based on an imaginary about fascism that considers it a product of irrationality. Such collectives also target neoliberalism, identified as a form of fascism, and engage in struggles on behalf of "minorities", shedding light on and countering forms of domination that usually remain in the shadows. Another relevant agenda is the struggle against the process of hyper-commercialization of football, which is criticized from a nostalgic narrative. The analyses also suggest that, in the researched context, football cannot be interpreted as an activity capable of segmenting progressive forces, since fans of rival clubs develop networks of mutual support in order to create a more egalitarian, fair and democratic society. In fact, football operates, in this context, as a powerful integrative force, capable of unifying the aforementioned forces and, thus, increasing their chances of constituting an effective challenge to the relations of domination.
