The memory-silencing relationship in the process of

transnational integration of Syrian refugees in São Paulo

SUMMARY:

Despite being a historical process, the migratory flow has become a growing global issue. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, in 2020 wars, violence and persecution led to the forced displacement of 82.4 million individuals. In this context, the objective of this research is to verify the role that memory plays in the integration of refugees who reside, either permanently or for a period, in Brazil. The hypothesis is that memory management is a fundamental issue in the adaptation of the ordinary, deeply influencing moments of everyday life, given the traumatic nature of many of these memories linked to a forced and, in most cases, violent displacement. For this work, life stories of six people of Syrian nationality were collected and relationships were drawn between these reports and theoretical contributions from authors who work on themes related to migration and memory. The choice for this research subject is due to the relevance of the number of Syrian refugees who have migrated to Brazil and also because of the possibility of exploring issues such as the religious, linguistic and cultural diversity that these people have in relation to the Brazilian population. It starts from the understanding that if the past is indestructible and nothing is lost in the world of the unconscious; dealing with reminiscences that bring both joy and pain, is relevant to the process of integration of these people who deserve - not only for the legal right to refuge, but also for the extensive suffering they have already experienced, a welcoming treatment that is as humane as possible .
