RESUMO:
This research aims to investigate the incorporation and treatment of the black racial issue in Partido dos Trabalhadores (Worker’s Party) – PT, in its portuguese initials, since its foundation, in 1980, until President’s Dilma Rousseuf impeachment, which took place in 2016, claiming that the central aspect along this trajectory was the ambivalence, that is, the mutual existence of apparently or even effectively contradictory perspectives. Those were incorporated to the party’s context in a tense and conflicted way. We are referring to notions such as race and class; universal and particular; universalism and identitarism, etc. In the 1980s, the ambivalence of the racial issue inside PT was marked by its affirmation, as a particularity, in a party that was first conceived on an universalist proposal based on class struggle. Institucional politicization of black identity and the difference made by black militancy in the political parties would then become a novelty in the post-dictatorship brazilian political scenery. Nevertheless, it was mainly a critical institucional accession, since the Black Movement’s own autonomy was questioned. In the 1990s, due to the emergency of neoliberal ideology and its practice in Brazil – which has constrained not only the political agents in its favor but also those contrary to the neoliberalism – the party and the brazilian politics, comprehensively speaking, swang towards the right, causing the paradigms that previously guided political action in pursuit of a socialist society to be gradually abandoned at the expense of others, more adapted to a capitalist society – or which, at least, didn’t have the objective of overcoming it. In the period comprehended by Lula and Dilma mandates, the ambivalence of the racial issue in the party goes from an internal debate towards a debate focused on public policies for racial equality to be implemented in the brazilian state, more specifically speaking, the afirmative actions.
