The human insecurity faced by the LGBTQIA+ people, and particularly by Black and poor individuals in Brazil (the country that kills the most trans persons in the world) has worsened, over the last years, especially since the political rise of self-proclaimed right-wing, fundamentalists, conservative and Christian leaders. These public figures frequently attack the progressive agenda and the rights of populations who experience such conditions of insecurity, under the allegation that schools and public institutions have been "contaminated" by social and moral degradation. In contrast, popular movements and social organization platforms continue to be places of resistance, hospitality and education. With the emergence of the New Coronavirus (Sars-CoV-2) pandemic, in March 2020, disputes within the political arena have become polarized, and the vulnerability of structurally oppressed populations has worsened. In this context, this study  asks the following question: to what extent and in what ways does popular education impact the lives of students and/or participants in learning experiences in social movements and LGBTQIA+ public policies programs? The answer was sought through an interdisciplinary approach (based on concepts from Critical pedagogy, Human Rights, International Relations, Decoloniality and Gender studies), thus investigating the social impact (both global and individual) of initiatives aimed at tackling the vulnerabilities of LGBTQIA+ individuals. To this end, our object of choice is the popular education experiences of UNEafro in the activities carried out by the Núcleo de Educação Popular Luz Laura Vermont (Luz Lara Vermont Center for Popular Education), the Centros de Cidadania LGBTQIA+ (LGBTQIA+ Citizenship Centers), the Casa de Acolhida Florescer para Mulheres Transexuais and the TransCidadania project (all in the city of São Paulo), analyzing how these experiences make it possible for these groups to be welcomed and receive a critical and transgressive citizen education. We also evaluated if the human security of this population is effective, through the institutional analysis of the Brazilian State’s responsibility to protect, ensure and enable the full exercise of citizenship for its population. The methodology employed, of an ethnographic nature, was based on the dialogue between Urban Anthropology and Gender Studies, prioritizing primary data obtained through personal accounts of life experiences. This resulted in a qualitative and analytical-critical work, based on fieldwork and in participating observation, through the analysis of discourse-based interviews (open and non-structured). It was possible to conclude that social movements and social organization platforms operated by popular education enable a solidarity network that allows for critical development, social inclusion, closer relationships and a flow of donations among those who participate in it, thus demonstrating that these mechanisms of survival and resistance create effective communities of exchange and empowerment.
