RESUMO:

This research has the interest of analyzing conceptions and proposals for the so-called popular classes that were constituted in the orbit of the conservative and authoritarian thinking that emerged in the First Republic, within the scope of the intellectual elites of the military sphere, having as object the selected texts of Juarez Távora that fit in the attempt to criticize and propose changes in Brazilian society "from above", through profound changes in the organization of the State existing in the context of the First Republic and the development of authoritarian thinking from the period until the end of the political regime (1914-1930) . This study analyzes in the author's texts the discussion of a model of "people" that will serve as an influence on the relationship of the State with the popular classes, which will be reflected in later historical periods. This research is expected to contribute to the analysis of military intellectual thought and the relations between the State, authoritarianism, the army and the popular classes.
