The Brazilian National Solid Waste Policy, if fully implemented, will imply changes in the gravimetric composition of the materials sent to the landfills, in addition to the scarcity of suitable areas for their implementation. Therefore, techniques to minimize the volume of MSW and its adequate management determined by the hierarchy proposed by the law will be necessary. In geotechnical practice, there is a concern about the shear strength, a property associated with the stability analysis and estimation of the structure’s lifetime. The present research aims to carry out direct shear tests of the dry and crushed waste collected at the two Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) located in the city of São Paulo (SP), to determine the cohesion and the friction angle of the material and evaluate sorting and crushing pre-treatment effects. The literature review indicated cohesion values ranging between 0 and 64 kPa and friction angle between 15.7° and 42.6°. However, it is possible that the crushed condition reduces the void ratio and, consequently, increases the dry specific weigh after compaction. Proctor Normal tests were previously performed rejects samples from each MRF, when ρd,máx values were obtained, ranging from 670 kg/m³ to 1010 kg/m³ and wot from 18% to 42%. Thus, it is understood that the shear test for crushed MSW samples can be performed according to that recommended in the standard ASTM D3080, 2011, with a 60 x 60 mm cell, rate of 0.7 mm/min and normal stresses of 50 kPa, 100 kPa and 150 kPa. In general, the high heterogeneity of the MSW highlights the relevance of conducting technical studies at the local level, so that future landfills will be safely designed.
