EVALUATION OF MASS REDUCTION TECHNOLOGIES FOR MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE FROM THE SOUTHEASTERN GROUP OF THE MUNICIPALITY OF SÃO PAULO

ÁREA: Engenharia Ambiental

RESUMO:

The environmental concern with the treatment and final disposal of municipal solid waste (MSW) generated in cities has increased worldwide. In São Paulo, the largest city of the Latin America, the use of sanitary landfills is preponderant and initiatives that incorporate treatment technologies with the objective of recyclable materials recovering , composting and energy generation are insipient. In this context, the main objective of this work is to evaluate the treatment technologies currently used in other countries and propose the better treatment scenario that incorporates the segregation of the MSW recoverable fraction to return as raw material to industry or for energy purposes in São Paulo city. Secondary data of gravimetric analyzes conducted between 2017 and 2018 of the southeast grouping of the city of São Paulo. All the data were used to simulate a mechanic segregation model and the result of this separation contributed to modeling four scenarios and these ones were compared to the current one whatever is (1) where 2% go to cooperatives and 98% go to landfill. The others simulated are: (2) current scenario and more two mechanical biological treatment units (MBT); (3) An increase of 150% in current selective collection, adding only 2 thermal treatment units; (4) Considers the current volume of selective collection, 2 TMB plants of scenario "2" and 2 thermal treatment plants; and (5) which considers the hypothesis of scenario "4" don't find disposal solution for the compost, causing its disposal in landfill. In view of the survey of environmental, financial and technical factors of each scenario, the TOPSIS method was used, which orders the preference for similarity of the solution close to the ideal. As a result, the scenario (4) was obtained which the selective collection was maintained at the current levels of 2% in relation to generation, inserts the mechanical treatment units that recover 25,12 %, between CDR and recyclables, and the thermal treatment units. All the plants together achieve of an estimated reduction of 80.24% of disposal in sanitary landfill.
