Sampling and Characterization Proposal for Dry MSW from the Ponte Pequena Mechanized Screening Plant, São Paulo-SP, Brazil

ÁREA: Engenharia Ambiental
RESUMO:

In many cities around the world, usually large cities in developing countries, inadequate management of urban solid waste (MSW) has caused adverse impacts on the environment and public health. In the city of São Paulo, the execution of collection and disposal services of MSW is granted by the City Hall to private companies, where the use of 2 Mechanized Screening Centers (CMT) play an important role in this process. As MSW have typically heterogeneous characteristics regarding the absence of uniformity, diversity of composition, shape, size, origin, among others, there is still no standard methodology for its collection and characterization in Brazil that has scientific consensus. Thus, the main objective of the research was to evaluate the dry fraction of MSW generated by the northwest grouping of the city of São Paulo, through a sampling plan and particle size and gravimetric characterization before and after screening at CMT Ponte Pequena. Samples were collected from May 2017 to May 2018 on alternate days and times of the week, considering only the selective collection trucks of the São Paulo Environmental Logistics concessionaire (LOGA). With the gravimetric analysis performed in the pre-screening stage (entry), it was identified that 8.9% of the received materials are rejects, indicating the good quality of the separation made by the residents. When evaluating the post-screening (exit) samples, it was found that actions are needed to improve the performance of this CMT, or even to evaluate the quality of recyclable waste, since only 28.7% of tailings leave. Regarding the particle size analysis, due to the differences between the input and output samples, it is noted that the mechanized screening associated with manual selection performed by Cooperative, had a significant positive effect, since the material considered rejected by the CMT and analyzed in the Output collections tend to be smaller than the material received. Based on the performance indicators, CMT Ponte Pequena 80.2% Tailings Rate (TR) is higher than the 63.5% TR obtained in the other CMT in operation in the city of São Paulo, showing room for improvement in the process. mechanized, since studies conducted in non-mechanized cooperatives show lower percentages of RT. Other indicators were also obtained, such as Recyclable Material Recovery Index (IRMR) and Recyclable Material Recovery Rate (TRMR), demonstrating that the MSW selective collection and recycling program in the city of São Paulo is still incipient, and its participatory expansion by all involved.
