SUMMARY:

Food security is a global concern influenced by both climatic and socioeconomic
factors. Despite yearly records of agricultural production, food insecurity and
undernourishment remain a reality on a global scale, with approximately 768 million
people experiencing food deprivation in the year 2021. Studies point to relationships
between climatic factors and food security and nutrition, including the impact of climate
on the weight and height of children in their developmental stages. Global climate
policy and societal well-being are widely debated topics in the international scientific
community. Within this context, the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon
is known to be a significant source of climatic variation with the potential to aggravate
socioeconomic and food production challenges. This phenomenon is predictable and
occurs in the tropical Pacific Ocean, cycling between the El Niño (warming) and La
Niña (cooling) phases. By studying this phenomenon and understanding its influence, it
may be possible to mitigate the climatic impacts on food security. The objective of this
research is to investigate the influence and impacts of ENSO on food security in Brazil.
Data on the prevalence of undernourishment, temperature variation in the Pacific Ocean
region corresponding to the Niño 3.4 index, and socioeconomic data related to income,
consumption, and food supply will be used. The study period spans from 1980 to 2020,
analyzing the correlation between various factors and comparing data trends between
Brazil, a country heavily affected by ENSO, and a group of countries weakly affected
but socioeconomically similar to Brazil. The prevalence of undernourishment has
decreased over time, with higher rates observed during El Niño years. When comparing
income factors with prevalence of undernourishment, it was observed that
improvements in socioeconomic conditions have a positive impact on food security. The
results indicate that in comparison to the group weakly affected by ENSO, the factors
affecting food security are intensified in Brazil, while indicators have remained
relatively stable over the years in the weakly affected group. It is important to note that
other factors such as public policies, social factors, and infrastructure can also influence
food security. Additionally, an econometric study based on a regression model will be
applied to gain further insights into these relationships.
