TITLE:

Analysis of Water Quality in Urban Streams in the Municipality of Santo André, São Paulo, Brazil

PAGES: 50
BIG AREA: Ciências Biológicas
AREA: Ecologia
SUBÁREA: Ecologia de Ecossistemas
SUMMARY:

Urban expansion negatively impacts the water quality in urban streams due to the degradation of vegetation cover and the release of diffuse sources of pollution. However, few studies have been conducted on water quality in urban microbasins in the metropolitan region of São Paulo. In this context, the objective of this study is to evaluate the quality of surface waters in seven urbanized microbasins in the municipality of Santo André and relate it to land use. Nutrient concentrations were analyzed using a Total Organic Carbon Analyzer (TOC – L), including total organic carbon (TOC), inorganic carbon (IC), total carbon (TC), and total nitrogen (TN) in the water samples. Additionally, an in situ analysis of parameters such as dissolved oxygen (DO), hydrogen ion concentration (pH), water electrical conductivity (µS/cm), and temperature (°C) was conducted using a multiparameter probe (HANNA HI9829) in six sampling campaigns between June 2021 and March 2023. The sampling campaigns conducted in June and July 2021 took place during the dry season, while the one in March 2023 occurred during the rainy season. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed to compare data for seasonality and among the seven streams. In terms of seasonality, there was a significant difference in temperature for all microbasins, pH, and electrical conductivity only for the Apiaí microbasin, TOC, and TC for Carapetuba and Apiaí, and finally, TN for Carapetuba. In the dry season, the temperature was lower, especially in Guaixaya, and higher in the rainy season, with Carapetuba and Apiaí standing out. The average pH was more alkaline in the rainy season, unlike electrical conductivity, which showed a higher average in the dry season. The average concentration of TOC and TC was clearly higher in the dry season for Carapetuba and Apiaí, as well as TN. Considering the differences among the studied microbasin, there was a significant difference (p<0.05) for all parameters, except temperature. DO did not directly correlate with the percentage of native vegetation in all microbrasins, as Comprido and Guaixaya streams had higher values despite being in more urbanized areas. However, it was observed that microbasins with a higher percentage of vegetation had a lower concentration of dissolved oxygen, similar to the study conducted by Daniel et al. (2002). Furthermore, based on the obtained results, it is possible to establish a positive relationship between the degree of urbanization, conductivity parameters, pH, and the nutrients TOC, IC, TC, and TN in most of the streams. In this sense, it is recommended that long-term monitoring of urban streams in the municipality of Santo André, SP, takes place and that specific legislation for the conservation of urban streams is developed, along with other potential measures.
