POTENTIAL MITIGATION OF CLIMATE CHANGE FROM THE ADOPTION OF NEW HABITS IN THE CITY OF SÃO PAULO

SUMMARY:

Regarding climate change, not only government and business actions are part of its mitigation, but civil society behaviors towards low carbon lifestyles are essential. Faced with the lack of data on social participation in the fight against climate change, this work highlights the importance of adopting practices, at first sight labeled as less relevant, in the fight against the climate crisis and aims to estimate the potential reduction of the carbon footprint of a São Paulo citizen based on the adoption of behavioral changes as a way of showing the relevance of individual consumption patterns’ impacts on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Through a bibliographic review and the use of life cycle inventory tools (Exiobase and Ecoinvent), data were collected on the intensity of consumption of products and services by the inhabitants of São Paulo city in the areas of food, consumer goods, housing, leisure, mobility and services and their respective GHG emissions. And this research was combined with in-depth interviews with the local population to define behavioral changes capable of reducing the carbon footprint of individuals in the region. The results showed that behaviors aimed at directly reducing consumption, such as saving water and energy, are the most viable practices among research participants, and that the adoption of new habits in the phase of using products and services is more common than buying and discarding behaviors. The application of the study's methodology showed that, if low-carbon habits are adopted, the potential reduction of the carbon footprint for a São Paulo citizen is 46.87% - that is, this percentage reflects the difference between the current and reduced average carbon footprint from São Paulo, whose results found by the present study are respectively 4.16 and 2.2 tCO2e/year. The current average individual carbon footprint of São Paulo residents (4.16 tCO2e/cap.year) is similar to the global average (4.0 tCO2e/cap.year), but there is a need to adopt less carbon-intensive habits so that this value becomes consistent with what the literature establishes that, for the Paris Agreement target of keeping the planet's temperature rise well below 2°C by the end of the century to be met, the average annual carbon footprint must be reduced to 2.0 tCO2e/cap.year by 2050. In this sense, the study estimated that, if low-carbon behaviors were adopted in the city of São Paulo, the average annual carbon footprint in the city could be reduced to 2.2 tCO2e.cap.year, the which is consistent with the goal of the Paris Agreement.
