DEGRADATION OF THE ANTIBIOTICS AMOXICILLIN IN EFFLUENTS BY THE FENTON PROCESS

SUMMARY:

Problems related to water quality have been much discussed, since it is a limited and essential natural resource for human activities, with emphasis on human drinking, agricultural activities and public and private supply. In addition to the degradation of water resources, the presence of persistent compounds in effluents, such as pharmaceuticals, personal care products and metabolized compounds, have raised concern for being toxic and causing damage to the environment. These types of pollutants are often not removed by conventional effluent treatment processes. Therefore, the present work contributed to the development and evaluation of an advanced oxidative process, specifically the Fenton type, for the degradation of amoxicillin in simulated effluent. In addition, in order to encourage more practices in the use of effluents, this work proposed the treatment of synthetic effluent at levels that allow its reuse, contributing to the reduction of demand on water sources and, consequently, to the conservation of resources. hydric. For this, from a series of experiments, the optimal concentration of Fe2+ (500 mg L-1) and H2O2 (1500 mg L-1) was determined with the treatment time set at 60 minutes. Three treatments based on Fenton were proposed: (I) without specific source of radiation; (II) using UV light; and (III) sunlight, as sources of radiation. Under these conditions, removals > 80% were achieved for COD and BOD, >98% for turbidity and yet 100% of amoxicillin was degraded with mineralization rate >66%. Chromatographic analyzes indicate the presence of X formed degradation products. The toxicity of the treated effluent to the organism Lactuca sativa was evaluated. Regarding the reuse of water, in comparison with current legislation, treated effluents are considered suitable for reuse in washing floors, sidewalks and irrigation of gardens; maintenance of lakes and channels for landscaping purposes, except fountains; reuse in flushing toilets; and reuse in orchards, cereals, fodder, pasture for cattle; other crops through surface drainage or punctual irrigation system and for indirect potable reuse, that is, in the recharge of surface or underground sources.
